Endoscopy in a teaching hospital: care, learning and questions you can ask
Teaching hospitals bring clinical practice and education into the same setting.

A place for care and learning
Teaching hospitals bring clinical practice and education into the same setting. At Zendale Endoscopy within LASUTH, members of the medical team also teach. The centre is a place where learners may see how procedures are performed and how clinical findings contribute to patient management.
Your care remains the central purpose
A teaching environment does not remove your opportunity to ask questions. You can ask who will be involved in your visit, who is performing the procedure and how the team will explain what happens. These are practical questions that help you understand the care arrangements.
Discuss the presence of learners
Students may attend supervised teaching sessions or demonstrations. If you have a question about learners being present, raise it with the clinical team before proceeding. Ask how your dignity, privacy and personal information will be protected, and discuss any concern you have.
Learning is more than observing equipment
A procedure demonstration can also involve clinical reasoning: why an investigation was requested, what information matters and how findings influence the next step. The wider patient journey includes preparation, communication, recovery and follow-up. Those are important parts of professional learning too.
Understand the different roles
An endoscopy visit involves more than one person. Clinical, nursing and support roles contribute to the process. A uniform or title alone may not tell you who to ask about a particular question. The team can help identify the right person for clinical advice, arrangements or a practical concern.
Use the opportunity for a clearer conversation
Ask for unfamiliar terms to be explained. Before leaving, know who will discuss results and how any outstanding laboratory work will be followed up. The Zendale–LASUTH partnership connects clinical service with learning, while your own questions and next steps remain part of the care conversation.
